Primerdesign launches Coronavirus qPCR pathogen detection kit designed to detect the latest outbreak 2019-nCoV

In light of recent events unfolding in China with the outbreak of Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) spreading across to other countries with over 17,000 infected and over 550 fatalities, Primerdesign has launched one of the first qPCR pathogen kit to detect the latest strain causing a global outbreak.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared this outbreak a global health emergency and WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated in a press conference “The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries,”.

Primerdesign is the first European Medical Device manufacturer to have launched a detection test for the novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). These kits are available immediately to purchase on our website and can be distributed globally. Our team of expert scientists has designed a test that will only detect 2019-nCoV and, unlike other tests, will not detect other related Coronavirus species allowing a more accurate result. This represents a significant advancement on the original testing guidance for the Wuhan Outbreak.

Coronaviruses are common across the world, there are a variety of strains that can impact humans and other species.  The latest strain that has caused the latest outbreak is new and unknown, a  strain of Coronavirus that has led to over 500 unwell and with pneumonia like symptoms and many infected and causing fatalities. The latest outbreak is a strain that is spread through human to human transmission. Typical symptoms of coronavirus include fever and a cough that may progress to severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

Global measures have been put in place to escort nationals out of Wuhan, China and restrictions to all transports in Wuhan have been implemented to control the outbreak.  Further to this China has completed the build of an emergency hospital that will cater to helping treat infected patients, built-in just 10 days.

There are 3 variations of our nCoV-2019 kit, both our standard and advanced are open platform and can be used with any qPCR instrument and our easy kit is compatible with our q16 instrument only. For full confidence and good scientific practice, we recommend customers use our genesig® Advanced kits as these include additional controls.

Our Standard kits include a positive control only, whereas the Advanced kit includes an endogenous control and an Internal Extraction Control (IEC) alongside the positive control. The endogenous control is provided to confirm the presence of sufficient, appropriate biological material in your sample extraction. The IEC is provided to confirm the quality of your extraction protocol, making sure that you produce the best results possible. This is achieved by quantification of a known template concentration in the same PCR reaction as your sample using a different read channel on your instrument.
